Foul Bay Challenge 2009.

All the elements that make up a perfect Bodyboarding event were to be found at the 1st. running of the Foul Bay Challenge 2009 presented by Bodyboard Barbados.    DSC_0063

Girls in bikinis, sweet reggae tunes and rum punch in hand. What else could an event coordinator ask for?
Behind such a perfect back drop as Foul Bay, the competitors’ abilities were tested as the one element no one has control over the ocean, produced less than ideal conditions.
After an extended break to allow conditions to improve the first heat hit the water at 12:30pm. From the word go the contestants showed that their abilities would not be hindered by the small 2ft-3ft swell.

First round standouts came from K. Straker, R. Burke, S. Adams & P. Larrier. This continued right through to the final heat as 3 out of the 4 were also finalist. S.Adams was replaced by a very determined J. Rodriguez who fought his way through two repercharge heats to get back into the main rounds to secure his spot in the final heat of the day.

As the final horn blew on the day’s event, P. Larrier winner of the Coles Road Classic showed his domination over his fellow competitors by securing two high scoring waves which proved to be more than sufficient and earn him the right to be called the 1st ever winner of the Foul Bay Challenge presented by Bodyboard Barbados.

Final Results
—————-
1st. P. Larrier
2nd. K. Straker
3rd. J. Rodriguez
4th. R. Burke

Paul is now the points leader in the B3 Series which will surely give him a psychological edge over his fellow competitors leading up to the final event at Soup Bowl, Bathsheba.

The event at Bathsheba is going to held in conjunction with the Barbados Independent Surf Festival presented by CSN & the BSA.
The Bodyboarding category will be an invitational and spots will be limited to current competitors of the B3 series and foreign invitees.

A special thanks must go out to the guys from the Caribbean Surf Network, Chris Clarke & Nicholas Donowa for their continual support of the B3 series. With out their assistants and help from other event sponsors none of this would be possible.
So Once again, Thanks Guys!!!!!!

TWELVE STAGES FOR BRC WINTER RALLY SUNDAY

Posted by Adrian Howard On October - 27 - 2009

Virgin Atlantic BRC Championships reach their conclusion

The 2009 Barbados Rally Club (BRC) Virgin Atlantic Driver’s and Class Championships reach their conclusion on Sunday (October 25) with the BRC Winter Rally . . . and the island’s fans are expected to turn out in their numbers for the 12-stage event, their last chance this season to see their heroes in action on home soil.
For competitors, there is still much to fight for – the battle for the Driver’s title remains unresolved, with Paul Bourne (Ford Focus WRC) and Roger Hill (Toyota Corolla WRC) separated by just 12 points. Bourne will be hoping for better fortune than last year – he was leading the BRC Rally Championship coming in to the final round, but time taken to repair the power steering of his Subaru Impreza WRC, damaged after an unplanned trip into the canes, lost him the title, which was snatched by Roger Skeete.
Neil Armstrong (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI) remains third, but is coming under pressure from Trevor Manning (Ford Escort WRC), now just three points behind; Skeete’s absence from the recent Autumn Gravel Stages dropped him from fourth to sixth in the table, Manning and Geoff Noel (Evo IX) the drivers to benefit. In the Class Championship, Skeete has slipped to fifth in Modified 8-WRC, Barry Gale (Evo VI) and Manning the drivers who have moved up, to lie third and fourth behind Bourne and Hill.
While most of the individual class battles are resolved, it is still not clear who will win the prestigious Overall Class Champion title; six drivers still have a mathematical chance of victory, as 20 points separate Group N leader Noel (185 points) and sixth-placed James Betts (SM9 Opel Corsa) on 165, and there are 21 points still to be scored, including the single route bonus point on Sunday, in fully-subscribed classes.
Behind Noel, Edward Corbin (Daihatsu Charmant) is now second on 177 points, after victory in M6 on the Autumn Gravel Stages moved him ahead of SM11 leader Jonathan Still (BMW M3), who is two points behind; SM10 leader Ian Warren (Suzuki Swift) is fourth on 170, with Bourne fifth on 166.
Elsewhere in the classes, John Corbin (Toyota Corolla) has moved up to second in M7, ahead of Adrian Linton, who has been absent for second half of the season; the Toyota Starlets of Neil Corbin and Stuart White are now tied for third place in SM9; while Dane Skeete (Peugeot 106) has moved to within 10 points of Production 2 leader Fabien Clarke (Suzuki Ignis Sport), who has not been seen in action since July.
Sunday’s event is scheduled to start at 8.30am from Ocean Park, which will also be the venue for scrutineering (from 7.00am) and the service park for stages 1 to 4, then 9 to 12, at Searles; Kendal Plantation Yard will provide service facilities for stages 5 to 8, at Guinea. A social and Prizegiving will follow the event, at the Barbados Clay Target Shooting Association Clubhouse at Searles. Entries close at 4.00pm on Thursday (October 29), with the Briefing Meeting at 7.00pm the same evening at the BCTSA Clubhouse.

Roett leading Ripcurl mission

Posted by Adrian Howard On October - 21 - 2009

by HEATHER-LYNN EVANSON

TALENTED young female surfer Chelsea Roett will lead a group of five teenage surfers to the Ripcurl Grom search event in California, United States next month.Roett, who was the first Barbadian female to win the New Smyrna Beach, Florida, event in August, will be heading to Salt Creek, California, along with other qualifiers Chelsea Tuach, Ametza Nicholls, Dane Mackie and Joshua Burke.
Coach Alan Burke, who has been taking the youngsters through their paces in a number of training sessions, said the surfers had stepped up “a level or two” and were on par or better than their American counterparts.
“One of our main concerns is that we are going into very cold water. “The kids will be wearing a rubber suit – three-millimeters [thick] on the body, two-millimeters on the arms – and you need to a have practice in that,” he told NATION SPORT, adding a wet suit also limited a surfer’s flexibility and made them a pound or two heavier.
However, because of local conditions, he said the team had only been able to practice in their wet suits “to a certain extent”. Practice was limited to either early mornings or late afternoons because of the hot conditions, he explained.
“So what I have been working on is getting the kids very fit because what the cold water does is, when it hits you in the head you get what’s known as an ice-cream headache, and it knocks the energy out of you, so it’s extremely tiring,” Burke said.
As a result, the coach said he had been concentrating on “a tremendous amount of paddling and running the beach”. “It’s been exhausting for them but I think it will pay off in the long run,” he said.
“The other thing I have been working on is trying to get them out of their comfort level. “When they are riding a wave, they are so accustomed to doing a certain degree of turns and a certain level of turns, and what I have been trying to get them to do is go past what they are comfortable doing, to try something little more difficult,” he said. In addition, Burke said he had also been imparting mental tactics and wave selection to the surfers. “What we’re looking to do is go to California in full steam, and be very aggressive in the water, and if we do qualify in California, we will be heading to Bells Beach, Australia, where Rip curl will crown the hottest grom surfer.”
The event in California comes off on November 14.
