Marshals among 70 awardees at Annual Prize giving

More than 70 members of the island’s motor sport fraternity were honoured on Friday evening (November 20) at the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Annual Prize-giving; the awards included 14 return tickets to the UK, presented by Rachel Pilgrim, marketing manager of Virgin Atlantic, title sponsor of the BRC Driver’s and Class Championships.
Among the evening’s awardees were marshals, whose voluntary contribution to the sport was lauded in addresses by Club Chairman Mark Hamilton and Mud Dogs Chairman Leslie Alleyne. The contribution of long-standing marshals Paul Bourne, Michael Broomes, David Carter and Lynne Croney was acknowledged with trophies donated by Marshall Trading, while another eight volunteers were rewarded in outstanding and rookie marshal categories.
Paul Bourne and Stuart Maloney were crowned Virgin Atlantic BRC Driver’s Champions, while Geoff Noel and Kreigg Yearwood collected the awards as Overall Class Champions. In the Mud Dogs Safari Championship, Robert Warren claimed the Sextant Challenge Trophy as Champion Navigator, Darrin White collected the Peter Farmer Memorial Trophy as Champion Driver, while the Mud Dogs MudFest Champion was Tfphill Juman.
Included in the Prizegiving for the first time was recognition of the increasingly popular grass roots discipline of Autocross, which has been attracting newcomers to motor sport – John Marshal was rewarded as highest points-scorer in the four events.
More than 300 competitors, marshals, media and their families attended the occasion, which was held at Balls Plantation, Christ Church; the evening’s entertainment also included a showing of the Sol Rally Barbados 2009 programme filmed by British production house Acceleration TV, which is being broadcast 20 times to more than 16 million homes in 40 countries across Europe on satellite station Motors TV throughout November.

CHELSEA ROETT SHINES IN CALIFORNIA

CHELSEA ROETT SHINES IN CALIFORNIA
Chelsea Roett 3rd Place Rip Curl Final - Copy
Chelsea Roett finishing 3rd at Ripcurl Gromsearch Nationals inChelsea Roett 1st in Round 1 2009 - Copy California, is swiftly becoming a surfer girl to be reckon with on the international stage! In two international events she has stood proudly on the winners podium the same.In the forefront of Barbados women’s surfing,Roett is doing her country proud, winning the Ripcurl Gromsearch Regionals at New Smyrna Beach Florida in August earning an automatic qualification to the Ripcurl Nationals held last weekend in Salt Creek,California.Sponsored by ACP Associates , Alan Burke Coach for the five Junior surfers Dane Mackie, Chelsea Tuach, Ametza Nicholls and Joshua Burke that qualified for the Nationals states “Chelsea surfed an exciting first round heat, started out strong leading the heat, then dropped to fourth, with the pressure on, she collected
a final good ride in the dying minutes to catapult her to first place and a birth in the finals” Burke said. In the finals Roett started strong again but was unable to fend off the aggressive approach of Champion Nage Malamed (Hawaii) who unleashed a repertoire of power surfing maneuvers, getting in sync with the ocean and eventually using up her 12 allotted waves, forcing her to return to the beach with 3 minutes remaining. This left 2nd place finisher Lakey Peterson(California) , 4th place Frankie Harrar(California) and Roett to battle out the time on their own, ensuing a struggle to
capitalize on Malamed’s return to the beach, the Californian’s got the better of Roett with good paddle tactics forcing Roett to miss a potential good scoring set wave. “For these surfers to qualify for this event is an achievement in it self, and Chelsea’s podium presence is a plateful of confidence to junior surfers in Barbados, what we need now is good
sponsorship so these kids can continue to realized their talents and do their country proud” Coach Burke states. “This event was broadcast live via internet and viewed by millions, and from what I’ve been told the commentators whom had visited Barbados prior and due to our presence did not stop speaking highly of the Island, this is tremendous exposer to Barbados” Burke says. This trip was made possible with the kind assistance of ACP Associates and
the National Sports Council.

WARREN AND WHITE ARE 2009 MUD DOGS CHAMPIONS
Edwards and Corbin win Nassco November Safari for Toyota

Former Novice Champions Dustin Edwards and Ryan Corbin ended their Barbados Rally Club (BRC) Mud Dogs Safari Championship season on a high, winning the Nassco November Safari on Sunday (November 15) . . . and they brought a smile to the sponsor’s face as well, as they won in their Blockman/SDRR Hydraulics/Crane & Equipments Toyota Hilux!
Meanwhile, despite their lowest finish of the year – fifth place following three previous top three results – Darrin White and Robert Warren (Flyin’ Fish/Lucky Locks Nissan Frontier) did enough to carry off the 2009 Driver and Navigator Championships.
The winners accrued 262 penalties and were the only crew to figure in the top six on both routes, third in the morning, fourth in the afternoon; their winning margin was just 32 penalty points, from Audley and Jeremy Croney, claiming their best result of the season in the JCB Excavators Suzuki Samurai, with Leslie and Anna-Lee Alleyne (Autozone Inc Mitsubishi Pajero) third, another 10 points behind, Anna-Lee collecting the award as highest-placed female.
Adrian Sinckler and Andre Murrell (Suzuki Samurai) were not only the leaders of the Novice Category after route one, but the event overall! With just 24 penalty points, they were more than 100 ahead of Dominic Brooker/Stephen Dear (SDRR Hydraulics/Next Generation Electrical/Joe Brooker’s Building Toyota Hilux) and Edwards/Corbin.
While they held on to their advantage among the novices in the afternoon and collected the trophies donated by Richard Daniel of Neptune Tours, along with a hat and mug from Nassco, they slipped down the overall order. Novice trophies were also presented to runners-up Matthew Durrant/Renne Mings (Tint Black Foot Flat Land Rover Defender) and third-placed David Brewster/Winston Drakes (Marks Auto Parts/Champion Auto Wrecker Service Suzuki Samurai).
The route was set by 2005 Champion Navigator and Driver Neil Barnard and Barry Gale, whom Mud Dogs Chairman Leslie Alleyne thanked for their work: “It really was a fabulous event and a great way to end the year. We went on some roads that I had never been on in my life. It was clear that Barry and Neil had put a lot of time into this one, because the tricks and the layout of controls were very cleverly orchestrated.”
The Prizegiving was held last night (Tuesday) at the Barbados Clay Target Shooting Association Club House, where Nassco’s Neil Corbin presented awards: the winning crew took home $500 in credit at Nassco, with $300 and $200 for second and third.
Alleyne added: “The atmosphere last night was great and people stayed around a long time, chatting about the year and reliving memories of the previous events. I would just like to take this opportunity to thank all of our sponsors for the year, our marshals and all of the competitors for making the 2009 season the success that it was.”
As Alleyne and wife Anna-Lee had been competing only for fun, they handed their $200 third prize to Simon Parravicino and Michael Jones (Toyota Hilux); although complete novices, they had showed great enthusiasm and finished 11th of the 22 crews on route two. They also won the Encouragement Award, donated by Biddy Barber, and a hat and mug from Nassco.
The Mud Dogs will join other members of the Barbados Rally Club for the Annual Prizegiving on Friday (November 20), where the year-end awards will be presented.

FINAL SHOWDOWN FOR THE MUD DOGS

Nassco prizes for top crews in November Safari

Competitors are making final preparations ahead of Sunday’s (November 13) Nassco November Safari, the fourth and4x4 final round of the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Mud Dogs Safari Championship; more than 20 crews were entered by last night’s (Tuesday) Briefing Meeting, with none of the leading points-scorers missing.
During the meeting, Nassco’s Neil Corbin reaffirmed the company’s commitment to the Mud Dogs, and further strengthened this by announcing new awards for the top three crews: Sunday’s winning crew will take home $500.00 in credit at Nassco, with $300 and $200 on offer to those finishing second and third.
But taking home those prizes will not come easy, as this year’s final event has been set by 2005 Champions Neil Barnard and Barry Gale. Barnard explained: “The first route is predominantly Tulip, with a couple of sections of BRC, while the second route is a real 50/50 mix of BRC and Tulip. The BRC sections are not long, and the rally in general is neither a car-breaker nor a mind-bender – well, it shouldn’t be! It should be good fun for both Pros and Novices.”
Crews must assemble at Gale’s Hatcheries, Mangrove, St Philip, by 7.00am, with the first crew scheduled to leave at 8.01am. The lunchtime stop-over will be at Automotive Art, Welches, some time between 12.30 and 1.00pm, with the finish at Black Bess in St Peter around 5.00pm, where the canteen will be fully-stocked for an evening social.
Mud Dogs Chairman Leslie Alleyne notes: “It promises to be an exciting day, with a Driver Challenge close to the start. Spectators interested in watching the challenge are asked to meet at the start, where they will be given directions to the challenge site.    off road
“The route setters have been very clever, by changing up the styles between the two routes. Barry has set the first half, Neil has set the second half – for the navigator, this means that it will be difficult to get into a groove. The two halves will come together today as Barry re-checks Neil’s and vice versa.”
The Prizegiving for the Nassco November Safari will be held at 7.00pm at the Barbados BCTSA Club House on Tuesday, November 17, once the results have been declared final.

Burkie Junior Surfing Championship Event # 4

JOSHUA BURKE WINS SURFING AT WOMAN’S BAY
Surfers Point(a.k.a Woman’s Bay) Inch marlow was the venue for the fourth and final event of 2009 in the Burkie Junior Surfing Championship Series sponsored by Going Places Travel.Burke surfed with determination, performing high risk maneuvers and slashing turns, which earned him the highest scoring wave of the day and out classing the ever improving 2nd place Chelsea Tuach and 3rd place Dane Mackie on his way to winning the premier 14-Under division,Fourth was Evan Moll. The event was blessed with beautiful 3-4ft waves wrapping around the point at the quickly becoming popular Surfers Point venue.Mackie however turned the table on Burke in the Under-12,consistently finding the best waves that allowed him to find lots of speed and strong aggressive turns off the top,Burke appearing to be on a winning mission, collecting equally as good waves riding with confidence, however it was Mackie’s set wave from around the point almost out of the judges view,”hitting the lip”,throwing in three “Round house cutbacks” and riding the longest wave of the day all the way across the bay to the beach that sealed the deal.3rd place was Andrew Rose and fourth Che Allan.
In the grommet division 10-Under Che Allan as predicted continued his dominance, winning his fourth event in a row executing teenager level maneuvers,2nd place 9year old Jacob Burke was not letting Allan surf away too easily, throwing every ounce of his 40lb frame behind his turns,3rd place Evan Moll surfed well all day and 4th place Andrew Rose.

RALLY CLUB COMPETITOR NUMBERS ON THE INCREASE

winter rally
Bouyant season for Virgin Atlantic BRC Championships

Nearly 80 drivers scored points in the 2009 Barbados Rally Club (BRC) Virgin Atlantic Driver’s and Class Championships, a 10 per cent increase on the previous year, and nearly double the number who scored in BRC events as recently as 2003; not only was there quantity, but quality, too, with both the Driver’s and Overall Class Champions settled at the final round, the latter decided by a tie-break.
No driver enjoyed a 100 per cent success rate during the 2009 season, although Overall Class Champion Geoff Noel looked set to do so until the early stages of the final event, the BRC Winter Rally; the impressive reliability record of his Group N (Production 4) Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX took its first knock of the year, with a persistent gearbox problem dropping him behind Harold Morley (Subaru Impreza N14), the only other among the six P4 runners to have contested every round.

winter rally
Noel’s total of 198 points equalled that of Modified 6 winner Edward Corbin (Daihatsu Charmant); under the tie-break rules, Noel’s greater number of class wins – 11 to Corbin’s 10 – settled the title, leaving Corbin the runner-up for the fourth time in seven years. SuperModified 11 winner Jonathan Still (BMW M3) finished third, two points behind on 196, SM10 winner Ian Warren (Suzuki Swift) fourth on 191.
Paul Bourne, who also won the Driver’s Championship and M8-WRC, was fifth, with 187 points collected in his Subaru Impreza WRC and Ford Focus WRC. Neil Armstrong (Evo VI) won M8-A, beaten only once in the nine events contested, by Martin Atwell (Evo III).

SuperModified 11: only Jonathan Still (BMW M3) contested every round, winning all but two, for a fifth class title in six years. The early-season battle with ’08 champion Nick Gill (Mazda 3) faded after Sol RB09, as mechanical failures prevented Gill achieving the results that the car’s pace deserved. Although the most popular class, with 13 drivers, many appeared only a handful of times
SuperModified 10: only Ian Warren (Suzuki Swift) and Rhett Watson (Ford Escort MkI) achieved a 100 per cent attendance record of the nine who turned out; Warren was beaten twice, on the second day of Sol RB09 (Watson), then in the MCBI’s Rally of the Sun & Stars (Cliff Roett, Toyota Starlet), on the way to his fourth consecutive class title
SuperModified 9: after a bad start – he missed the first event, then the Starlet failed in the third – even four wins could not help Josh Read to a hat-trick of class titles; six wins, four in the higher-scoring rallies, gave last year’s runner-up James Betts (Opel Corsa) an unbeatable total. In another popular class, with 12 starters, Neil Corbin (Starlet) won the scrap for third with Stuart White’s similar car
Modified 7: although 10 drivers scored, only Freddie Gale (Toyota Corolla RunX) entered every round, claiming his first class title since ‘03; he benefitted in part from John Corbin’s (Toyota Corolla) late start, also the demise of reigning Champion Adrian Linton’s Vauxhall Astra GSi, following a rare visit to the scenery on Sol RB09
Modified 6: alone among the eight drivers to contest every round, Edward Corbin (Daihatsu Charmant) was beaten twice, first by Danny Williams (Ford Fiesta), then by Jamal Brathwaite (Mitsubishi Mirage) on day two of Sol RB09; Brathwaite finishes runner-up, and could have been closer, had he not missed the first four rounds
Modified 5, P3 & P2: M5 winner Sean Cox (Suzuki Swift GTi) was the only driver in these poorly-supported classes to complete nearly a full season; Sean Field (Peugeot 306) won P3, while Fabien Clarke (Suzuki Ignis Sport) might have lost his P3 class title had Dane Skeete (Peugeot 106) chosen to contest the final event
