Chelsea Roett finishing 3rd at Ripcurl Gromsearch Nationals inChelsea Roett 1st in Round 1 2009 - Copy California, is swiftly becoming a surfer girl to be reckon with on the international stage! In two international events she has stood proudly on the winners podium the same.In the forefront of Barbados women’s surfing,Roett is doing her country proud, winning the Ripcurl Gromsearch Regionals at New Smyrna Beach Florida in August earning an automatic qualification to the Ripcurl Nationals held last weekend in Salt Creek,California.Sponsored by ACP Associates , Alan Burke Coach for the five Junior surfers Dane Mackie, Chelsea Tuach, Ametza Nicholls and Joshua Burke that qualified for the Nationals states “Chelsea surfed an exciting first round heat, started out strong leading the heat, then dropped to fourth, with the pressure on, she collected
a final good ride in the dying minutes to catapult her to first place and a birth in the finals” Burke said. In the finals Roett started strong again but was unable to fend off the aggressive approach of Champion Nage Malamed (Hawaii) who unleashed a repertoire of power surfing maneuvers, getting in sync with the ocean and eventually using up her 12 allotted waves, forcing her to return to the beach with 3 minutes remaining. This left 2nd place finisher Lakey Peterson(California) , 4th place Frankie Harrar(California) and Roett to battle out the time on their own, ensuing a struggle to
capitalize on Malamed’s return to the beach, the Californian’s got the better of Roett with good paddle tactics forcing Roett to miss a potential good scoring set wave. “For these surfers to qualify for this event is an achievement in it self, and Chelsea’s podium presence is a plateful of confidence to junior surfers in Barbados, what we need now is good
sponsorship so these kids can continue to realized their talents and do their country proud” Coach Burke states. “This event was broadcast live via internet and viewed by millions, and from what I’ve been told the commentators whom had visited Barbados prior and due to our presence did not stop speaking highly of the Island, this is tremendous exposer to Barbados” Burke says. This trip was made possible with the kind assistance of ACP Associates and
the National Sports Council.
