Coolangatta, Queensland, Australia – A magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Chile early Saturday morning, resulting in a tsunami warning for the East Coast of Australia effective today. Report here
Event organizers, coordinating with the Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology, were forced to call both the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover and the Roxy Pro Gold Coast events for the day, with the potential tsunami projected to hit at 8:15am.
“We’ve been monitoring the situation with chief meteorologists throughout the night and all projections are indicating the effects to hit the Gold Coast at approximately 8:15am,” Rod Brooks, Quiksilver Pro Contest Director, said. “What those effects will be, we cannot be sure. We’ve been advised that the biggest surge could hit anywhere from six to 12 hours after the initial surge, so we’ve called competition off for the day. The event site is closed for the day, and we’ll check back tomorrow at 6:30am.”
Event No. 1 of 10 on the 2010 ASP World Tour, the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast enjoyed incredible surfing for Round 1 yesterday, with reigning two-time ASP World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS), 28, and former nine-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA), 38, dominating the opening day of competition. Virgin Atlantic Championships get under way Saturday
The Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Spring Gravel Sprint on Saturday (February 27), kicks off the 2010 motor sport season with an International flavour, with a welcome return to the island scene by Trinidad-based Jamaican John ‘Pentti’ Powell in the Subaru Impreza WRC S12 in which he finished third in Rally Jamaica 2009.
Powell is one of 18 entries – half in the four-wheel-drive categories – listed for rounds one and two of the Virgin Atlantic BRC Driver’s and Class Championships; start time for the double-header, on the popular Searles stage, has been moved back to 12.00pm and fans are promised around four hours of virtually non-stop action.
Popular with local fans, Powell has twice finished second in Rally Barbados in recent years – 2005 & ’07 in his Toyota Corolla WRCs – and has been a regular competitor in BRC events. Reigning Champion Paul ‘Surfer’ Bourne opens his defence at the wheel of his Banks/LIME/Virgin Atlantic Ford Focus WRC07, challenged not only by Powell, but also by the runner-up in last year’s title chase, Roger ‘Ninja’ Hill (Esso/Nassco/MotorMac Toyota Corolla WRC).
And there is further interest in Modified 8-WRC, with the class debut of Dean Serrao in the Impreza WRC S9 in which Bourne started his 2009 campaign, while Brett Clarke is making an unusually early-season appearance in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI. Read the rest of this entry »

Xtreme Degreez occupies an important niche in the Caribbean by targeting the important 16-35 youth market. By offering in-depth reporting of such extreme sports as surfing, skateboarding, paragliding, off road 4x4, motocross racing, wind surfing, car racing and more, we\'ve created a cutting edge online magazine with enormous appeal to active youth in Barbados and the wider Caribbean.
The basis of the online magazine is to primarily showcase a true sense of the extreme sports that are available in Barbados by allowing those involved to share their stories with the Barbadian public. It also give the trial and error segments related to each of the following sports and what is involved, therefore setting the pace for those who are interested in pursuing any such sporting activities.
It also serves as an outlet for upcoming stars in extreme sports to be seen and heard and hopefully gains meaningful sponsorship thus giving them the opportunity to compete on the international seen as others before them. It also allows the Barbadian public to become more involved and foresee the vast opportunities involved in these types of sports.
